The area around La Roc is very rural and quiet - a narrow winding roads lead to historic Montcuq with its vibrant Sunday market on the tree lined boulevard where locals meet to play petanque or just chat in the shade. The town is overlooked by its Norman castle which offers a commanding view over the countryside. Montcuq has a strong English expatriate population, and the Sunday market is a great gathering place to shop and have coffee after, English or French.
Lauzerte, a few kimometres to the south, sits high on a hill, and is well known for its square with the turned up paving stone sculpture in the corner.
The countryside is a veritable cornucopia of food production with soft fruit orchard, nut trees and groves, vegetables, melons all being grown beside the general arable crops and livestock.
Those who enjoy walking can walk to either town along the world famous GR65 St Jacques de Compostela pilgrim route which passes very close to La Roc- it is about 3km (2 miles) to Montcuq and 15km (10 miles) to Lauzerte along well marked and signed paths.
If you don't make the Sunday market. weekly markets are held in most villages and towns in the area, and you are able to go shopping there for the freshest and best produce direct from the producers on any day of the week. See Markets for details of where and when the markets are.
For a larger town head north about half an hour to Cahors. This ancient town sits on the River Lot, with the famous Pont Valente across the river a must see attraction. Other attractions in that direction are the cliff village of St Cirq La Popie, perched high above the river Lot, and Rocamadour, a cliff village with a rich religious history.
To the south Montauban sits at the meeting of the Tarn and Garonne rivers, and the rose brick buildings give the town a charming character. A little nearer is Moissac, a historic town and home to the Abbé and Cloisters which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a must see if you are at all interested in history.
The area is gently undulating, and good for exploring on foot, two wheels or four wheels: Bikes can be hired locally - see the Links page for details.
