Welcome to the département of Gard - in the very east of Occitanie region, and on the borders of the spectacular Cévennes National Park.
St Privat is a large modern house accommodating up to 10 people on the edge of the charming village of St Privat Les Vieux, a short distance from the larger town of Alès.
With a pool exclusive to guests, and a fenced garden it offers excellent accommodation for a large family or families holidaying together as there is complete accommodation (kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom) on two levels but with plenty of space to join together to eat, swim or relax in the sun.
Away from the house, the fabulous scenery of the Cévennes National Park and the Tarn Gorge awaits to the west, or not far to the east are the cities of Nimes and Avignon with the Rhone Valley and the Pont du Gard. The unique landscape of the Camargue and the Mediterranean coast are only about 80km/50 miles away.
The nearest airports are Montpellier (approx 50 mins) or Marseille and Carcassone (approx 2 hrs)
St Privat offers well equipped family accommodation with a securely fenced garden.
There is off road parking space for at least three cars.
The accommodation is conveniently laid out over three levels as follows (See floorplan)
Ground floor:
1 x Double bedroom, 1 x Twin bedroom, Kitchen, Shower room, Garage store with washing machine, Glazed terrace opening onto main terrace
First floor:
2 x Double bedrooms, Open plan Sitting/Dining room, Kitchen, large family bathroom, south facing open balcony overlooking pool and garden
Second floor:
Spacious air conditioned Master bedroom with private south facing balcony with distance views over the treetops.
At ground level the arches of the terrace are glazed in, making a large sunny conservatory. This opens out onto the main terrace overlooking the pool.
The enclosed garden extends to some 5000 sq metres with the main feature the 8 x 4m pool, exclusive to guests.
In easy view of the house, and with integral steps, swimming is safe for all ages. The pool is protected by a re-enforced cover
The garden has many trees, so there are plenty of opportunities for shade, and there is a boulodrome and child's swings as well as hammocks strung between trees in the shade. (nb autumn images)
There is a large gas barbecue making preparation of substantial outdoor meals easy, and with easy access to the downstairs kitchen al fresco dining is a positive please.
Sunbeds and sunshades are also provided for guest use.
Immediately beside the garden is a small road that becomes a footpath up a short distance to Le Croix de Bertranet which has a superb panoramic viewpoint and orientation table showing the points of interest in the surrounding countryside.
St Privat des Vieux is a small peaceful community, and a walk of about 500m from the house gets you to village centre amenities including boulangerie, grocery and pharmacy. The streets are charmingly narrow and lined with older houses.
A short drive away, including a superb view of the Cévennes National Park is the busy town of Alès with all amenities, supermarkets, restaurants and more.
To the west is the spectacular scenery of the Cévennes National Park, and beyond that, about 60km (40 miles) from St Privat is the equally spectacular Tarn Gorge and the Millau Viaduct - a wonderful piece of modern engineering
The Cévennes have an interesting history, especially during the religious wars of the 17th century: There is more information on the Cévennes on THIS PAGE (opens new window)
In the other direction from St Privat - and at the other end of the historical scale - near the city of Nimes is the world famous Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, a spectacular series of arches which has stood for nearly 2000 years.
And another famous bridge a little further away at Avignon, renowned in the famous song 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon' is an attraction along with the Palais des Papes, a reminder of when the papacy was based in Avignon.
In the distance will be seen the white topped Mont Ventoux - one of the major climbs for Le Tour de France, making St Privat an ideal base for anyone wanting to follow Le Tour between the Alps and the Pyrenees.
The area also produces much food and wine, with nearby Uzès styled as the Truffle Capital of Gard - and for those young at heart the town also boasts a Haribo Museum and visitor centre.
A day trip of around 50 miles will get you to the unique landscape and abundant wildlife of the Camargue and the Meditteranean coast including hordes of flamingos and the famed wild white horses : Head for Arles, due south and slightly east.
