Renovated from a tobacco drying barn which is part of the English owners' large property, Maison d'Amis is a simple house and an ideal base for individuals and couples exploring the Lot valley and surrounding area. Maison d'Amis is situated on the southern outskirts of Prayssac, where the River Lot meanders to make a loop, and the riverbank can be accessed within 500m to the east or west of the house. Situated about halfway between Cahors and Fumel, and about a third of the way from Cahors to Villeneuve Sur Lot, Maison d'Amis is a great location from which to explore in all directions as there is also a river crossing to the south close by which is on a road that goes through to Montcuq. Maison d'Amis is a very good starting point for daily outings on foot or by bicycle as the immediate area along the river is very flat, although testing hills are not far away.
Maison d'Amis shares the Owner's large gated and gravelled parking area so vehicles are secure at all times.
The Ground floor of Maison d'Amis is a large open plan Kitchen and Living area. A good range of Kitchen equipment includes a hob and fan oven, microwave oven and a large fridge/freezer.
Seating includes a sofa and armchair, Dining table and chairs and a Television unit. There are glazed doors out onto the large covered 'au vent' terrace overlooking the Owner's field.
Stairs lead up to the First floor where you will find the Double bedroom with dual aspect windows offering views over the fields and also to the town beyond.
There is also a small landing area which the Owners have resisted the temptation to make into a small bedroom. This area has comfortable seating and a very good selection of books. It allows Guests a peaceful space away from the Sitting room downstairs if they wish.
Bathroom facilities are adjacent to the bedroom comprising a high spec Shower along with a basin and WC.
There is no washing machine in the accommodation at Maison d'Amis, but the Owners have an Industrial washing machine and will do washing for Guests if required for a small charge per load - which can be fairly substantial amounts compared with a domestic washing machine.
Maison d'Amis has two outdoor terraces - one beside the main door in the open sunlight which is ideal for breakfast and alfresco meals. The other is a very private covered 'au vent' terrace beside the sitting room which looks out over the fields and faces west, making it ideal to enjoy the spectacular sunsets over the hills in the distance whilst being large enough to provide excellent shade from the midday sun.
Both have tables and chairs, and there are sun loungers in the 'au vent'
Planted in the field in full view of both outdoor areas, a small wildflower meadow gives a pleasant splash of colour, and there is also an assortment of other shrubs and trees. A charcoal barbecue is provided for guests to use.
The aerial shot above shows Maison d'Amis in the centre of the picture with its distinctive roof nearest the field: The field also belongs to the Owners and is carefully managed to provide a pleasant outlook for Guests.
The Owners, Rob & Kim, also have a wood-fired pizza oven which is often fired, and fresh home-cooked pizza is frequently on the menu
Whilst there is no swimming pool at Maison d'Amis, there is a recently refurbished (2016) water park at Catus, about 15 minutes drive away to the north, or another at Montcuq about 30 mins drive to the south: Both have safe swimming, usually, lifeguard patrolled in high season, and also offer other waterborne fun: Refreshments of some kind are usually available as well.
Maison d'Amis is a short drive or gentle walk from Prayssac, which is one of the larger towns along the Lot valley between Cahors and Villeneuve-sur-Lot. It has all the amenities likely to be needed for everyday living by way of shops, banks, restaurants etc during a stay here, and a supermarket is the nearest shop to Maison d'Amis.
Prayssac boasts one of the best markets in the area, and every Friday morning the centre of the town becomes a colourful bustling scene with a great variety of foods, drink and other goods on offer - the place to get the finest and freshest fare direct from artisan producers.
Nearby Luzech has its market on Wednesday, and other markets are listed in 'The Area' information above.
The local Tourist office, which combines operations with three other towns along the Lot, is open all year and has an excellent website at http://www.holidays-lot-vineyard.co.uk/ with much information, especially the Cahors AOC wine production area which straddles the river Lot in this area.
This site also includes details of canoeing, delivery inclusive bicycle hire and much more to help your exploration and enjoyment of the area.
Wherever you travel, especially to the south of the river, you will find a wealth of food production, especially soft fruit orchards and sunflowers. Many of the products along with those from artisan producers will be available at the weekly markets held somewhere near on every day of the week.
Many come to explore the Cahors vineyards and there are many open with tastings and direct purchase pricing: Listings of the wineries open for visitors are on the Tourist Information link above.
The area is rich in history, with historic villages found all over the area and Roman activity at Cahors and Villeneuve Sur Lot.
Puy l'Eveque, a little downstream, is a quaint village with medieval roots built on a steep slope down to the river, and Le Château de Bonaguil and Chateau Biron, a short way to the north of Puy l'Eveque, are major historic attractions in the area. Upstream, a little way east of Cahors, is St Cirq Lapopie, listed as one of 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France', another medieval village on the banks of the Lot.
With excellent access to all directions, and with internet access Maison d'Amis is also an excellent base for those seeking houses in the area, and some estate agents are included in the Links menu at the top of this page.
