Set in a peaceful hamlet of just 5 well-spaced cottages along a lane that goes only to the hamlet, Le Farguiel makes an ideal base for a family or couple who want to explore all that the rich countryside of Lot, Lot-et-Garonne and Tarn-et-Garonne has to offer, as the point at which the three departments meet is very close to Le Fargueil. Nearby footpaths run to both Montaigu de Quercy and Roquecor along the edge of a ridge from which there are glorious views of the Quercy countryside, with welcoming bars and restaurants in both villages. Owned and managed by an experienced Property manager who also lives in the hamlet, guests are assured of a friendly and helpful welcome. The property is a deliberately spacious and single storey, and with it also being on a level site make it suitable for those with mobility issues, although no specific aids or fittings are available.
Approaching Le Fargueil along the tiny lane off the nearest road, the house is on the left near the end of the lane, with a hard parking space for at least one car in front of the house: A second car could also be fitted in with care.
Entering the house through the glass sliding doors, you enter the Sitting room, with ancient timbered beams set into the exposed Quercy stone and complemented with white plastered walls, giving a very fresh clean ambience which is common throughout the house.
The Sitting room has a quality large sofa and a very contemporary table and low stools. The television is in this room.
The next room is the very spacious kitchen, with a large dining table which could seat 8 if required, and has overhead lighting on the beam above.
The well-equipped kitchen has a long run of fitted floor units, creating more than ample workspace, and an impressive inventory includes an electric hob and oven, double sink, large fridge/freezer, microwave, food processor, dishwasher and washing machine. With units and walls, all finished in white, a fresh light contemporary atmosphere is maintained.
Returning to the Sitting room, a second door leads to a small passage, and off this, the next room is the Shower room, with basin, WC and heated towel rail.
The passage then opens into the spacious double bedroom with wardrobe, and at the end of the passage is the Twin bedroom, again with a small wardrobe.
The property has electric radiators throughout and is available for rental for 9 months of the year. Wooden shutters on the outside of the windows provide protection from the sun in summer and insulation in the winter.
The gravelled area outside the Sitting room has an outdoor table and chairs with sunshade, ideal for sitting and dining outdoors. The two walls of the house face south-west and north-west, so combine to make a very sunny spot.
On the northeastern wall of the house a roof extension has been fixed, and table, chairs and benches are provided for this area which is shaded from the sun in the heat of the day.
A charcoal barbecue is provided for outdoor cooking.
The remainder of the garden is grassed, and there is more garden furniture that can be moved as guests require: A couple of mature trees provide shade around the area where the cars are parked, the remainder of the garden enjoys the sunshine. Many crocuses and other small plants have been put in to ensure that there is some colour in the garden at all times during the flowering season.
Le Fargueil sits on the edge of a valley with wooded slopes and open fields all around, and there are plenty of walks, including a route to Montaigu de Quercy which is about 5km/3 miles on foot, or 8 km/5 miles by road. The picturesque village of Roquecor with a lively café/bar in the centre is slightly closer, but with limited other amenities.
Montaigu de Quercy also has a large leisure lake, which includes a beach area, safe lifeguard managed swimming, pedalo and boat hire, tennis court and bars and restaurants.
A short distance from Le Fargueil is the old Roman route, now the D656, which provides straight fast access to the main regional centre of Agen, famed for its prunes, the plums for which are grown in many of the fruit orchards around the area among other fruits including peaches and apricots.
The other large town in the area, Villeneuve Sur Lot, was a Roman crossing point for the River Lot, and has much medieval character as well as being a centre for river-based activities. Nearby Pujols is a village listed among 'Les plus beaux villages' with a wealth of medieval character and a Sunday morning market.
Travelling along the river Lot to the east there are a number of interesting riverside villages and towns - Fumel with le Chateau de Bonaguil nearby, Medieval Puy L'Eveque, Prayssac and Cahors, rich in Roman and medieval character, and then onwards to St Cirq Lapopie, another of 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France'
Further to the north is the Dordogne, with Bergerac an attractive town on the river, and to the south the pretty town of Montauban and onwards to the aerospace capital of Toulouse. The raw beauty of the Aveyron Gorge is approximately an hours drive from Le Fargueil across beautiful rolling countryside.
Le Fargueil is also close to many of the hilltop bastide villages, including Montaigu de Quercy, Tournon d'Agenais, Lauzerte and Beauville which all have their own character among medieval fortifications, narrow streets and timbered houses with spectacular views from their fortifications.
Town and village markets are a feature of the area, with a market on somewhere every day of the week, and these are listed under The Area at the top of the page.
Alongside the fruit, vegetables and general crop production there are areas with large vineyards, and wineries offering tastings, and among these Vin du Tsar, Chateau Latuc and the English run Domaine du Garinet are linked to under the Links section.
Good restaurant food is easily found in most towns and villages, and at reasonable prices: A selection of restaurants are also included among the Links.
For those eager to explore the area, there is plenty to be found in and around the glorious landscape within a reasonable distance from Le Farguiel.
