Around the area
The roads and countryside around La Tuilerie are very quiet, and beckon guests to explore on foot and by bicycle. Montcuq is a lively village with plenty going on, good shopping and a good choice of restaurants.
St Daunès is on the main road that runs from Cahors on the River Lot down to Valence d'Agen on the River Garonne, and has beautiful countryside along its length, including Lauzerte, one of 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France'. As with Montcuq, it has a medieval heart rising high above the rest of the town and many buildings of interest and its narrow streets lead off a central square. Another of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France', St Cirq Lapopie stands on the river Lot a short drive east of Cahors.
Cahors has much historical interest based around the medieval Pont Valentre, and further to the north there are a number of prehistoric sites including neolithic activity around caves, and the drive down the picturesque Lot valley will bring guests to other attractive towns including Prayssac, Fumel, Penne d'Agenais and Villeneuve sur Lot.
Travelling around, guests will see a diverse range of crops being grown in the fields, with many acres of sunflowers and more usual cereals alongside considerable acreages of fruit orchards, vegetables and nut groves creating a delightful patchwork across the countryside throughout their respective growing seasons. Many of these products are available at the local markets held on every day of the week somewhere nearby: The nearest markets are Montcuq (Sunday), Prayssac (Friday) and Cahors (Wednesday and Saturday) A more comprehensive list of markets is found under The Area link at the top of this page.
Food in restaurants is generally of a high standard, and reasonably priced: Especially recommended are the locally produced duck dishes.
The wines of Cahors have long been in the shadow of nearby Bordeaux. but among the knowledgeable the rich deep red wines produced along the River Lot are well known, and there are many wineries that can be visited for tastings and Direct Purchase: Some are included in The Area information at the top of this page, and others included in the Tourist Information pages on the Links page.
Many local activities will be listed in the local press, the English language 'Quercy Local' being one popular place to advertise events.
