Roque was formerly the farmhouse of a mixed farm, but active farming ceased several years ago. The house is still owned by the family, and makes a great place for a family holiday.

Standing in a very peaceful setting with its own road in and out, and with a large courtyard at the rear of the house Roque is very safe for children to play. Slides and swings suitable for younger children are also provided.

Additionally the roads near the property are very quiet country lanes, making walking and cycling very pleasurable. Roque stands near the edge of an escarpment, and tantalising glimpses of the view across the countryside can be seen from the upstairs rooms: A short walk along the road allows the full north westerly view away to Penne d'Agenais and beyond to be seen, with the silver dome of le Basilique Notre Dame often twinkling in the sun.

Indoors Roque retains much character of a French family home, with stylish dark furniture, and makes a homely place for a family to escape to for a few weeks.

Accommodation

Arriving at Roque you drive down the long straight drive through maturing fruit orchards, and into the large courtyard at the back of the house where vehicles can be safely parked.

Off the entrance lobby is a large Double bedroom with wardrobe, (image below) and from the window glimpses of the view to the north west will be seen.

Next to this bedroom is the Kitchen / Living room. The kitchen, in dark wood, is complemented by an informal dining table with chairs,  and a coffee table and chairs. A smaller brick fireplace has been constructed within the beams of the traditional fireplace.

Kitchen equipment includes an electric hob and oven, microwave oven and dishwasher: A washing machine is situated in an outbuilding. French terrrestrial television is available.

The Kitchen leads out to a passage, and immediately across the passage is the Dining /Sitting room with a very nice dark wood table and 8 chairs, and in the same room arranged around the fireplace is a comfortable 3 piece suite. An exterior door opens onto the rear courtyard. This is complemented with bookcases and cupboards to make a pleasant room with an easy ambiance.

Along the passage are found the remaining two bedrooms, one Double, and one Twin: Both spacious rooms with wardrobe storage. There is a wet room shower in a continental style, and a separate wc also.

Outdoors

One of the outhouses off the courtyard at the rear of the house houses the washing machine and storage for pool furniture and play items.

Roque is very much a place for the outdoors to be explored and enjoyed: The large courtyard is surrounded by the redundant farm buildings, and has a large tree in the centre providing shade. Tables and chairs are provided for use here or around the pool. A charcoal barbecue is provided for outdoor cooking.

roque1237roque1238

The other farm buildings are not in regular use, and they are secured, and maintained in sound condition. Additional yard space offers youngsters on bicycles a lot more safe space.

The 10 x 4m swimming pool, with salt water and Roman steps, is on the other side of the Courtyard, and raised above the level of the yard with views into the fruit orchards beyond. To conform with French legislation, the pool has a hard cover.  The pool can be heated at additional cost: Please request details on booking.

Around Roque, there are fields and orchards which can be explored, and as mentioned before, a short walk away is an extremely good landscape view, and a walk along the road into the woods beyond will provide opportunities for exploration and adventure.

Around the area

The area of Lot-et-Garonne has a great deal of interesting features for guests to explore. Natural beauty, natural history, wine, food and other drink and local history abound.

applecropStaying at Roque, Guests are already in the centre of a rich vein of agricultural and horticultural production, with apples, pears, apricots, peaches, walnuts, hazelnuts and more grown alongside more traditional cereal crops and other vegetables: Many of these products will be available either fresh or as products at markets which are held daily in villages throughout the area: Penne d'Agenais market is at Port Penne, where the bridge crosses the river to Saint Sylvestre on a Sunday morning. A list of other local markets is under The Area on the menu at the top of this page.

Many of the vineyards have wineries and are open for tasting and purchase of their produce: A few, including the English run Domaine du Garinet, are listed on the Links page above.

Much of this produce will also find its way to restaurants, and there are many to choose from in the area, with some listed on the Links page above. Eating out in this area is generally of a very high standard, and not expensive.

landscape2Natural beauty abounds in the quiet rolling countryside with frequent spectacular landscape views as you travel around, usually dotted with one of the hilltop bastide villages, or a chateau somewhere within sight. Towards the Lot and the Lot valley there are some spectacular scenes such as the medieval village of Puy l'Eveque, built on a very steep outcrop directly above the river.  The historic bastide villages, including Tournon d'Agenais, Montaigu de Quercy and Lauzerte, all retain medieval stone defenses. From their hilltop positions they have commanding views over the surrounding countryside, and all have narrow streets lined with timbered buildings and ancient arches within the walls of the town.

The river Lot is a base for activities on the water wherever it can be accessed with canoeing, kayaking, boat hire and fishing all available.  For those seeking a slightly different water based experience, Montaigu de Quercy has a water park with a large beach area and lifeguard monitored safe swimming, pedalo and boat hire, zip wire network and a selection of bars and restaurants.

The major towns on the Lot, Villeneuve-sur-Lot and Cahors, have plenty to offer visitors, both having Roman connections, and both retaining much medieval history. The villages of Pujols, near Villeneuve and St Cirq Lapopie near Cahors are both listed in 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France'
